Still Life: The Heart of Funoon Studios
You know, if Funoon Studios were an art movement, it would without a doubt be Still Life. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of appreciating and beautifying everyday objects—that’s really why I make art. Beauty is all around us, created with intention, whether found in nature—like fruits, animals, skies, and plants—or in man-made objects such as architecture, street signs, patterns, and teacups. It's all there for us to see and appreciate if we take the time to notice.
Moroccan Breakfast
I had breakfast at a quaint spot in the old Madina in Tetouan. I couldn't help but take a picture because everything looked so beautiful. It wasn't a fancy restaurant, but it was steeped in Moroccan tradition. I loved the vibrant colors of the food—it tasted amazing, too, Allahuma Barek! The light and shadows danced on the zalij tile work, creating their own unique patterns, alongside the intricate design of the window fence.
Playing with Colour, Texture, and Style
Lately, I’ve been diving deep into colour and texture, tweaking my style to bring in a more traditional feel while still keeping that modern edge Funoon is known for. It’s been a fun challenge! I’ve been sketching more than ever—it’s become my go-to for experimenting and getting ideas down before I take them into Procreate. I love that balance of old-school and digital; sketching keeps things raw and organic, while Procreate lets me refine everything and add those marks that make my work feel like me.
Stories, Tradition, and Everyday Beauty
At the end of the day, my art is all about telling stories and connecting with the traditions of the MENA region through the simple things—food, objects, patterns, and experiences. There’s so much history in the details, whether it’s the warm glow of a brass teapot or the delicate weave of a rug. It all speaks to something bigger, something familiar and comforting.
Still Life is a way for me to slow down, notice the little things that are always accessible (an incredible blessing, alhamdulillah), and turn them into something beautiful. In a world where it’s all about wanting more and more, it’s a lovely little habit I’ve got myself into. :)
